Spurs have mugged us a few times in the past, Paul Allen, Martin Peters, Defoe and the Carrick deal to name a few. Thankfully Rice won’t be going to them unless Kane fancies coming our way :)

I don't think so either, 360.

Which is a bit LOL considering they sacked off all the cup competitions to win it.

Just realised that Arsenal have drawn against the 8th and 15th team in the league. That's quite a big drop in form.

They have Brighton, Newcastle, Chelsea and Man City. This could be kind of crazy for them. I don't think they're winning this league.

Swap deals seem to be a thing of the past, but I'd imagine we could get a first option deal on one of their players at a good price if we do a deal.

The player from them we should go after is the young striker on loan at Reims, Balogun. He looks like exactly the type of sroliker we're desperate for. Only seen highlights of him admittedly, but I'd be all over that.

From memory I think Defoe had 18 months left on his contract and he wasn’t going to sign a new one. That combined with us being in the championship and needing money plus him being petulant and getting sent off 3 times meant 6 million plus Zamora was probably as good as we were going to get at that time.

But yeah Tottenham did get a good deal.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Arsenal - Official Match Thread - Preview
We got mugged on the Defoe deal because he insisted on leaving - Spurs got an absolute bargain.

Zamora was an excellent signing for us, especially as a Championship club at the time. But the deal still favoured Spurs. They got a striker who went on to score 100 goals for them. Not Bobby's fault, though.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Arsenal - Official Match Thread - Preview
We also got Zamora & cash as part of the Defoe deal and he played a big part in us getting promoted so it can work taking players in exchange.

Whether we get the right ones is a different matter.

The Dicks deal is EXACTLY why you have to make sure you have the right manager in place, why you insist on the maximum amount of money and not some "cash plus cast-offs" deal, and why you must have a board and coaches who know how to spend/maximise the money that comes in.

Unfortunately, none of these things are currently in place at West Ham.

On the performance yesterday, I thought we were fucking atrocious for the opening 20 minutes and worried it would be a cricket score. Then we finally woke up to the fact that we've actually got some talent in the side when you scratch beneath the shit manager and tactics, and suddenly we woke up.

The moment Rice finally realised he's a better player than Partey, and started bashing the fucker around in midfield, we got a firm foothold in the game and grew in confidence. When he mugged Partey off for the first goal (nice supporting run from Paqueta, too, btw) then Arsenal panicked.

It wasn't pretty, because we're not a footballing side (25 passes compared with Arsenal's 127 in the opening 17 minutes). But Arsenal crumbled when we got physical with them. Coufal, Rice, Zouma, Antonio, Bowen and even Soucek (without the ball, of course) all realised they had the making, physically, of their direct opponent. Even Cress with Saka (I rate Saka, he's a damn clever player).

It wasn't stylish West Ham - we're a long way from that under Moyes. But Arsenal crumbled when the game got physical. That's their youth/inexperience. They had nobody who could grab the game by the scruff of the neck when elbows and tackles started flying. I shouldn't enjoy those moments - but I did!

Rice walks into that Arsenal team ahead of Partey and Xakha. I think Arsenal's fans found out why Arteta is so desperate to land him. But he probably expedited his departure.

History says that the Rice deal will leave a mess.
1. We will sell him to whoever offers Sullivan (not necessarily the club) the best deal. - Precedent - The Ferdinand Deal and Brown, Harry and the bonus. Wider thinking maybe the Boleyn Ground.
2. We will not secure adequate replacements - Evidence Cole; Carrick; Johnson; Peters and again Ferdinand.
3. As previously when we sell the crown jewels we will see the player prosper - and frankly good luck to them, whilst we languish in mediocrity.
I would love to see us sell up and push on, (that is if he has to go which the lack of progress by the club says he must) but that is simply not the West Ham way. It certainly would appear unlikely to be Sullivan's choice. Sell high buy low and reap the rewards.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Arsenal - Official Match Thread - Preview
Yup- totally agree. it's an utter mess. IF they leave it to the football people and get the right people in place quickly then they could become a force pretty quickly but as you say if they don't they could be in a state for a while.

With the situation they have with players coming in January usurping those who came in only months earlier, a bloated and lopsided squad where it seems impossible to keep all the players happy or mould them into a unit, there's no hope. They need someone immediately to restore some order and common sense. Although I really hope they don't just for the comedy value. It does go to show that throwing money really isn't the answer if it's not coupled with any kind of strategy or football nous.

To bring it back to Rice, he'd have to really think long and hard about going there. He's not going to want to be in and out of the team rotating with Enzo or Kovacic or Kante or whoever else. He needs to be the man, wherever he goes. The potential for boom is equal to it being an utter disaster.

That’s a maybe, and admittedly a probable, but its not an absolute guarantee. That is an organisation lacking any sort of harmony vs clubs which are completely aligned already, and who will have the advantage of offering Champions League football next season, and you would think, be more attractive to players to improve further still while Chelsea stutter.

Mind you, I wouldn’t want to join Arsenal either, for all the reasons you listed so well earlier!

“Any Rice deal will probably be like the Dicks transfer, throw in a couple of quid at us and a couple of cast offs. So we get ripped off as usual”

That Dicks transfer transformed our season. Getting Marsh & Burrows in exchange plus adding Chapman worked well for us and we certainly didn’t get ripped off.

If anything Liverpool were the ones that got ripped off as he didn’t do much up there and we got him back a year later for peanuts.

We also got Morley & Bishop in exchange for Mark Ward in 1989 which worked out well for us as well so taking players in exchange is not necessarily a bad thing depending on who they are.

Agree in terms of next season, but once Chelsea get their house in order, they will be a force again. They need a strong manager and or DOF who will tell the owner to stop playing fantasy football and ruthlessly cull the ridiculously bloated and lop sided squad, but they will get there. It's clear money isn't going to be an object for them going forward from the statement they made in the last few transfer windows, even if there was no strategy behind it. They probably already have most of the players on their books to be a solid top four side. It's a case of making a bunch of individuals into an actual functioning team. I hate the guy, but someone like Klopp would get a fucking tune out of them and quickly and have them winning trophies. That American bloke Boehly just needs to know his place.

What i would say is that Brighton absolutely pulled their pants down with Coocoocachoo. He's been absolute gash and nowhere near representing any sort of value for what they forked out. And they already had a really good left back at the club.
